Perché possiamo decidere di andare avanti o indietro, a destra o sinistra, in alto o in basso e non possiamo decidere di muoverci allo stesso modo nel tempo? In altre parole: perché il tempo è diverso dallo spazio?
L'Universo nel quale ci muoviamo è quadridimensionale, come l'esperienza comune ci insegna bene (sebbene potrebbe avere molte più dimensioni delle quali non avvertiamo l'esistenza... ma questo è un altro discorso): se vogliamo dare un'appuntamento dobbiamo specificare, oltre al luogo, anche l'orario. Eppure il tempo ci appare in un qualche modo diverso dallo spazio: tant'è che lo distinguiamo, mentre le altre trè dimensioni sono assolutamente indistinguibili tra loro. La differenza è che nel tempo esiste una direzione obbligata: nel tempo si può andare solo verso il futuro, questa è l'unica caratteristica che distingue il tempo dalle dimensioni spaziali. Ma perché?
